Second 2008 Open day

Following on from the success of the previous open day in April, Notts Anaconda is inviting people with any amount of experience – or none at all – to come and try their hand at one of the country’s fastest-growing sports.

The free open day is on Sunday 17 August 10.00am when anyone interested, with any level of sporting ability or experience, is welcome to come and have a taste of the dragon boating experience with the club’s prize-winning crew.

The morning is open to anyone of both genders and any age (although under 16s need a parent or guardian in the boat with them). If you've never tried it before how do you know whether you'll like it? You could be surprised! Come along and have a go. All you need is yourself and clothes that you won't mind getting a bit wet; we'll provide changing facilities and all the necessary equipment.

Meet at our clubhouse which is located next to the Forest Ground at Trent Bridge -map. Call 07954 424358 or contact us for any more information. Hope to see you there!

First trophy of the season from Cardiff

Notts Anaconda picked up their first trophy of the season after coasting into the Plate Major Final at Cardiff.

The racing on Sunday 18 May started well with a fantastic first 200m race, and continued in the same vein. Every race was strong and fast with the boat running smoothly all day and the coach using words like 'fantastic' and 'proud' in the huddles after each race.

The team worked together to produce some stunning results, beating Secklow (a team that has often beaten Notts in the past) an almost embarrassing five times - with several clear seconds between the finish times. In the 500m Plate semi-final race, Notts took the lead by a clear 4 seconds, ahead of Amathus Bees, also known as a worthy adversary.

The major final was a photo finish, with Amathus Bees taking first place, Exe-Calibre and Worcester in second and third, and Notts Anaconda taking home the fourth place trophy.

A great day's racing from everyone.

Triple first success at Exeter

Three new club members were inducted into the world of dragon boat racing in Exeter on Sunday 4 May - and all three claimed to enjoy it, even wanting to come back for more!

The weather was kind to us on the day, with the predicted rain just about holding off, and we raced well. No trophies this time round, but a succession of strong performances showed just how well the team is coming together.

As the event was all the way down in Exeter and on a bank holiday weekend, we made the most of it and camped on both the Saturday and Sunday nights - a great opportunity for a group meal, drinks and games of 'Dirty Minds' round the camp "fire" (make that camp electric light).

We're now into a rigorous schedule of fortnightly races until August, but always pleased to see new faces coming down to training sessions, and also pleased to welcome back a couple of old faces who've made a recent return. The next race event is Cardiff on 18 May.

Open day 2008 (Part 2)

The 2008 open day was once again a success, with several people getting out of a bed on a Sunday morning to come down and try dragon boating for the first time.

Because so many people did come down we were able to get two boats out on the water, and after some initial instruction in paddling technique, the 'newbies' (as virgin paddlers are known) got to race against a team of seasoned paddlers - and held their own in two very close races. (The seasoned paddlers' excuse that they were all out the previous night didn't hold much water!)

Newbies who came to join us on Sunday ranged in age from 13 to 50, and all enjoyed it. Dragon boating really is a sport is for all ages and abilities. We hope that all of those who tried it on Sunday will be back for more - and look forward to them joining us at our next race in Exeter, where we're hoping the weather will be a bit warmer than last weekend's race in Liverpool, when we paddled in the snow!

Anyone who missed the open day can still come down and have a go at any training session. Just turn up at 10am on Sundays or 6pm on Wednesdays, or call 07954 424358 to find out more. (Check the race calendar to make sure we'll be there before turning up to a Sunday session.)

Worcester race meeting

Notts Anaconda narrowly missed out on reaching the major final by 0.2 of a second, and instead had to make do with a place in the minor final. Bring on the National Finals in October! The full race results are available as a pdf.

New boat

Notts Anaconda have purchased a new boat. This is a modern design, with no bulkheads, and it is also significantly lighter than the old one. This should give us that extra edge in a race situation!

Start of a new season

The club took part in its first race of the new season at Liverpool on 6 May. Although we didn’t win any trophies this time it was a great opportunity for the new members to experience what dragonbaoting is all about. This year's dates and venues are here

April open day

The Open Day was held in Nottingham on the 15th of April 2007.  It was a great success and we had many new people come and experience this unique water sport with Notts Anaconda. Many of these new paddlers then had the chance to experience their first competitive race in Liverpool on the 6th May. From first time in boat to full race action in less than 2 weeks!

If you too want to experience this sport, feel fee to come and join us at any one of our training sessions. We meet by the Notts Anaconda’s clubhouse which is located next to the Britannia rowing club, adjacent to the Nottingham Forest football ground at Trent Bridge. Training times are Wednesday at 6pm and Sunday at 10am. More information can be found on the join page.
